Human behaviour is guided by the purpose of satisfying one or more of the 6 human needs. When an event occurs in our life, we take that stimulus through an inner process. Most people believe that this thought process includes the physiology, focus, language patterns, and belief structures that create meaning. From this meaning we can create emotions, from this emotion we produce behaviours and from these behaviours we produce results.

If you want to read a little bit more about the six human needs psychology, I invite you to visit my post describing what it is and how can it help you to change your life.

6 human needs test

There are six universal human needs that can be satisfied in negative or positive ways.

These needs are:

  • Certainty
  • Significance
  • Uncertainty/Variety
  • Love/Connection
  • Growth
  • Contribution

The first four are essential to survive. They are the fundamental needs of the personality – everyone must feel what they have achieved, even when they have to lie to themselves to do so.

The last two are for human development and personal fulfillment. They are the needs of the spirit, and not all find a way to satisfy them, although it is necessary for the sense of accomplishment to be lasting.

When our needs for love, growth and contribution are satisfied, they tend to cover all our needs. When we focus on something beyond ourselves, all our problems and sources of pain become less significant. The contribution is the human need that effectively regulates our other 5 needs. If you are focused on the contribution towards others, and you have the certainty of doing it (there is always a way to do it), you have the variety (the contribution is highly interactive), you have the significance because you know that you are helping others and that you are improving your life, you have the spiritual bond created because when you help others you have a deep connection and you grow at the same time by helping others.

We all experience the 6 human needs. However, everyone finds different ways to satisfy them. Each of these needs can be satisfied in positive or negative ways. Some forms are good for the person, others are good for others and for society and others are bad for everyone.

To understand individual motivation it is essential to understand the approach, the meaning and the physiology.

Usually, people take behaviours that violate what they really value to do what is necessary and meet their needs.
